The Faculty of Science and Engineering at Iwate University offers a wide spectrum of academic fields, ranging from fundamental research in the natural sciences to the development of cutting-edge technologies. Through education and research that integrate science, engineering, and data science, we cultivate the ability to address various challenges faced by society and local communities and to create new values.
In recent years, science and technology have advanced at an unprecedented pace. Fields such as artificial intelligence, data science, semiconductor technology, and environmental and energy sciences are becoming increasingly important in shaping the future of society. In response to these changes, the Faculty of Science and Engineering will undergo a reorganization in the 2025, introducing a new curriculum that enables students to acquire information literacy and data utilization skills in addition to expertise in their chosen disciplines. Regardless of their field of specialization, we aim to cultivate individuals who can analyze data, apply technology effectively, and contribute to solving societal challenges. Moreover, science and engineering today are disciplines that transcend national borders. Iwate University provides opportunities to deepen learning from a global perspective through exchanges with overseas universities and international collaborative research. Experiences that connect the local community with the wider world will broaden students’ perspectives and further expand their future possibilities.
Iwate University is also distinguished by its strong ties to the local community. The Faculty of Science and Engineering actively promotes joint research with local industries and municipalities, industry–academia–government collaboration projects, and technical consultations for the region. In addition, we are committed to fostering the next generation of engineers and researchers through public lectures, events for high school students, and laboratory tours.
The Faculty brings together faculty members from a wide range of fields, including chemistry, mathematics and physics, materials science, information science, electrical and electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, and social and environmental studies, where advanced research is conducted on a daily basis. Students build a strong foundation through lectures, deepen their understanding through experiments and practical training, and develop their knowledge and skills into solid capabilities by pursuing their own research themes in laboratories.
